Hike in UK visa fees: Important update for travellers visiting the UK! British visa fees will increase from today

In a recent update to students and visitors worldwide, the British government's proposed hike in visa fees has officially taken effect as of Wednesday, October 4, 2023. This increase will make travelling to the United Kingdom more expensive, impacting individuals from various nations, including India.

According to a report by PTI, the fee adjustments are substantial. Previously, a visit visa for stays less than six months cost £15, while a student visa had a price tag of over £127. However, as of today, the cost of a visit visa for stays under six months has surged to £115, and the fee for a student visa has skyrocketed to £490. These new rates pose a significant financial burden on Indian and other international students aspiring to study in the UK.

The British Home Office has defended the rate hike, asserting that it is a necessary step to ensure adequate funding for critical public services and contribute to public sector salaries. A spokesperson stated, "It is right and appropriate to increase visa application fees as it will allow us to properly fund vital public services and contribute to public sector salaries."

The fee hikes are primarily intended to support the country's public sector pay increases

The decision to raise fees was initially announced by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak back in July. The fee hikes are primarily intended to support the country's public sector pay increases. Importantly, fees paid by visa applicants will also be channelled towards funding the UK's state-funded National Health Service (NHS) and Health Surcharge, which will see a substantial increase in costs. Sunak emphasized, “We are going to increase the fee that immigrants who come to this country have to pay when they apply for a visa, it is called the Immigration Health Charge (IHS). These fees are a levy they pay to access the NHS.”

As part of the fee adjustment, the spokesperson highlighted, "All of these fees are going to increase, and that will amount to an increase of over GBP 1 billion. So, visa application fees are going to increase significantly across the board, and so will IHS." The Home Office further disclosed that the cost of most work and visit visas would rise by 15%, while priority visas, study visas, and sponsorship certificates would see an increase of at least 20%.

However, these fee hikes have not gone unnoticed, with critics, including the UK Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, denouncing the move as "divisive." They argue that raising visa fees for individuals seeking to make the UK their home is unfair, divisive, and potentially dangerous, especially given the prevailing high cost of living. As the spokesperson from the UK Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants pointed out, “During the crisis, this move could make life difficult for all of us. With families already left without cash for essentials due to high visa fees, they are saving from month to month to save for the visa.”

The impact of these fee increases on students, visitors, and the broader immigrant community remains a topic of concern, with many eagerly watching for any potential future developments or revisions in the fee structure.
